-- What are Leaf Springs? --
Originally known as laminated springs, vehicle leaf springs are one of the most common type of spring available, and date back to earlier times. Speaking about the appearance of the leaf spring, it is made of arc shaped strips of spring steel having rectangular shaped sections. The hub of this arc renders the position for the axle, while tie-holes are there for fastening to vehicle’s structure. For heavy vehicles, a leaf-spring is manufactured from multiple leaves loaded over each other, often with increasingly smaller leaves. A leaf spring serves three major functions, which are, locating, damping and springing functions. No doubt, the interleaf friction technique can offer a fantastic damping function, but if it is poorly controlled it can result in adhesiveness in the motion of the suspension system. Due to this, several manufacturing companies dropped the idea of employing this method and instead used rubber pads between the leaves called interleaf pads.
One can attach vehicle leaf springs to the design in 2 ways, at both ends or at only one end (usually front) with other end fixed through shackle with a pin. The shackle is a short, swinging arm that causes the leaf-spring to stretch when firmed, which means, it can be effectively used for soft springiness purposes. In previous times, there were a variety of springs that ended at bowl-shaped ends to carry a spinning member.
