About Leaf Springs and Parabolic Springs. Multi Leaf Springs can have many leaves from one to over twenty is not unusual. They are supplied for Light and Heavy Commercial Vehicles. Parabolic springs give a comfort ride where as Multi Leaf Springs would be chosen as an option for heavy work. Most manufacturers offer a parabolic or a Multi Leaf Spring option for their HGV’s Heavy Trucks, Lorry or Lorries range. Airbag Springs and Link Arms are another type of Leaf spring that has an air bag attached. In the Main Multi Leaf springs are fitted as a stronger Leaf Spring where the vehicle is used uneven sites and are usually 4x4 or AWD (All Wheel Drive). Leaf Springs have been used in the production of Horse Drawn Carriages and Trailers since the middle Ages and changed very little in design with the introduction of the motor car at the beginning of the last Century.

Our Leaf Spring Manufacturing Process

Leaf Springs steel is supplied annealed (in a soft state) to allow component manufacture prior to the hardening process. Small quantities of Leaf Springs are handmade larger quantities are mass produced. This treatment consists of heating the work-piece to an appropriate hardening temperature, which is dependent upon the particular steel analysis involved, holding in the Furnace for sufficient time to ensure the whole work-piece is at temperature and then rapidly cooling it in suitable medium Quenching oil.

Following quenching, the work-piece is in its hardest but brittle condition and therefore requires a further thermal treatment (tempering, or drawing), to produce the optimum balance of properties. This consists of re-heating the work-piece to a lower temperature and holding for a specific time. The choice of time and temperature depends upon the amount of tempering or ‘softening back’ the work-piece requires. Hardening of Carbon engineering steels (in the carbon range 0.3 to 0.55%, ranges between 800 and 900 degrees centigrade Tempering is generally carried out between 400 and 700 degrees Centigrade.

Parabolic Springs follow a similar process but are made of thick spring steel of a different grade of spring steel some 25mm to 50mm thick steel is not unusual and when red hot are “squashed” by rollers to form the tapered shape down to around 16mm plus for the rolled eyes for the bush locations or could have no eyes just slider ends.
